How do CSS patterns work without an image?

What does background-size do in these patterns?

background-size sets the size of one repeating tile. For dots, grid, checkerboard and zigzag the gradient describes a single cell and background-size: 40px 40px tiles it across the element. Making the size larger spreads the motif out; making it smaller packs the pattern tighter. Stripes use repeating-linear-gradient, which carries its own period, so they do not need background-size.

Can I use a transparent background so the pattern overlays content?

Gradient color stops blend by default. To keep stripes and grids crisp this tool places two stops at the same position (for example, color 20px, transparent 20px) so the change is instant. Sub-pixel sizes can still soften edges, so prefer whole-pixel sizes and thicknesses, and keep the line thickness an integer for the sharpest result.

For simple geometric patterns they are excellent: zero extra network requests, tiny CSS, resolution-independent and GPU-friendly. Very complex multi-layer patterns with many gradients can cost some paint time on large areas, so keep the number of stacked gradients modest and you get a lightweight, scalable background.
